School Holiday Survival Guide for Parents

📅 28 August 2025 ✍️ Lisa Roberts

Six weeks of summer holidays ahead? Don't panic! Our practical guide helps you survive and even enjoy the school break.

The school holidays are nearly here! Whether you’re filled with excitement or mild panic, this guide will help you navigate the weeks ahead with your sanity intact.

Week-by-Week Planning

Don’t Plan Every Day This is crucial! Build in completely free days where you have zero plans. Children need downtime, and so do you.

Mix It Up Alternate between:

  • Big days out
  • Local activities
  • Home days
  • Playdates
  • Screen time days (yes, really!)

Create a Visual Calendar Children thrive on knowing what’s happening. A simple calendar with pictures helps manage expectations and prevents the daily “what are we doing today?” questions.

Budget-Friendly Activities

Not every day needs to cost a fortune! Here are some brilliant free or cheap options:

Free Activities

  • Local parks and playgrounds
  • Beach trips (we’re in Wirral - make the most of it!)
  • Library sessions
  • Nature walks and bug hunts
  • Home movie marathons
  • Garden camping

Low-Cost Activities

  • Swimming
  • Soft play sessions
  • Museums with family discounts
  • Picnics
  • Craft supplies from pound shops

Surviving at Home

Set Up Activity Stations Create dedicated spaces for different activities:

  • Reading corner
  • Craft table
  • LEGO zone
  • Outdoor play area

Screen Time Strategy Be realistic about screen time during holidays:

  • Set clear boundaries
  • Use it strategically (like when you need to work!)
  • Choose quality content
  • No guilt allowed!

The Boredom Jar Write activities on lolly sticks and pop them in a jar. When someone says “I’m bored” - pick a stick!

Managing Multiple Children

Individual Time Try to give each child some one-on-one time, even if it’s just 20 minutes.

Quiet Time Institute a daily quiet time where everyone has space for independent activities. This is essential for both children and parents!

Rotate Favourite Activities If siblings have different interests, take turns choosing activities throughout the week.

Working Parent Strategies

Activity Camps Research local holiday clubs early - popular ones book up fast.

Childcare Swaps Team up with other parents for reciprocal childcare days.

Flexible Working If possible, spread holiday leave across different weeks rather than taking all six weeks off.

Grandparent Time This is what grandparents are for! Don’t feel guilty about asking for help.

Rainy Day Backup Plans

Always have contingency plans:

  • Indoor play centres (shameless plug - we’re here rain or shine!)
  • Cinema
  • Bowling
  • Home science experiments
  • Baking sessions
  • Board game tournaments

Food Planning

Breakfast Set up a breakfast station where older children can self-serve cereal, toast, and fruit.

Lunch Keep it simple:

  • Build-your-own sandwiches
  • Picnic lunches
  • Batch-cook and freeze
  • Accept that beans on toast is perfectly fine!

Snack Station Reduce “I’m hungry” complaints with a designated snack drawer filled with approved options.

Self-Care for Parents

This is NOT selfish - it’s essential!

Early Mornings Wake 30 minutes before the children for quiet coffee time.

Evening Routine Maintain bedtime routines even during holidays. You need your evenings!

Ask for Help Whether it’s your partner, family, or friends - don’t try to do it all alone.

Lower Your Standards The house doesn’t need to be perfect. Focus on creating memories, not Instagram-worthy moments.

Making Memories Without Stress

The 10-Minute Rule If children are struggling with an activity or place, give it 10 minutes. If it’s still not working, leave without guilt!

Photo Memories Take photos but don’t forget to be present in the moment too.

End of Day Chats Ask children about their favourite part of the day. These conversations are golden.

Dealing with “I’m Bored”

Boredom is actually brilliant for:

  • Creativity
  • Problem-solving
  • Independence
  • Imagination

Don’t feel pressure to constantly entertain!

The Last Week Strategy

Back to Routine Gradually reintroduce school bedtimes and morning routines.

School Preparation

  • Buy uniform
  • Check shoe sizes
  • Organise supplies
  • Read required books

Savour It Despite the challenges, these weeks are precious. They’ll be teenagers before you know it!

Our Top 5 Holiday Tips

  1. Plan less than you think you need to
  2. Budget early and stick to it
  3. Build in rest days
  4. Lower your expectations
  5. Remember - fed, safe, and loved is enough

Local Recommendations

Living in the Wirral area, you’re spoilt for choice:

  • New Brighton beach
  • Royden Park
  • West Kirby marine lake
  • Thurstaston beach

Final Thoughts

The goal isn’t to create picture-perfect holidays. It’s to get through six weeks with everyone relatively happy and in one piece.

Some days will be magical. Some days you’ll count down to bedtime. Both are completely normal!

You’ve got this! 🌟

P.S. - If you need a couple of hours to yourself, our daily admission tickets are a lifesaver. The kids play, you relax with a coffee. Everyone wins!
